Come and discover the joy of bowls at our free Open Day on Sunday 14th May

Ladywell Bowling Club are holding a free Open Day on Sunday 14th May from 11am - 4pm. It's a day for all the family, where you can experience a new sport and get free coaching from our experienced players. Not to mention free refreshments!

The organiser of Ladywell's Open Day is Club Captain, Phil Welch. He explained what you can expect: "We want it to be a fun day, where people of all ages can enjoy our wonderful sport. So, I'd encourage everyone to come along with their family or friends and give it a go. You'll get to meet some of our club members who can explain the basic rules of the game and give you some coaching. And we're offering free refreshments throughout the day."

He adds that one of the main things about the Open Day is to overcome some of the preconceptions people have about the sport. "A lot of people seem to think that you have to wear the right kit and buy all the equipment to play bowls. But it's actually a very accessible sport. And certainly at Ladywell, as with most other bowling clubs, we have plenty of spare sets of bowls for people to use. So, all you really need is a pair of flat-soled shoes or trainers."

Phil also hopes that the Open Day will overcome any impression people have that bowls is a game for older people. "It's actually one of the few sports where young and old can play alongside each other on an equal footing," he says. "If you watched any of the bowls competition at the Commonwealth Games last year, you'll have seen medallists ranging from their 20s to their 70s. So, it's one of the most accessible sports around. And most new players pick it up in no time - although becoming an expert takes a bit longer. Some of our members at Ladywell have been playing for more than 20 years - but that just goes to show how enjoyably addictive it can be!"

Here's what can you expect at Ladywell's Open Day?

  • An introduction to bowls from some of the club's experienced players.

  • A fun bowls target game for children

  • Free refreshments

  • Sign up as a club member on the day and get full 2023 season membership at half-price - just £30

It promises to be a great day out for everyone. And Phil points out that bowls is very good for improving your fitness, without being too strenuous. "New players are often surprised at the amount of exercise they get by playing bowls," he says. "It can seem like quite a

sedate game, but you actually get a good workout, without really noticing! It's also a very friendly and sociable sport - at our regular roll-ups and in competitive matches, we always take a break halfway through for tea, coffee, biscuits... and a good chat. It's a great way to meet new people. So I'd encourage everyone to come along to the Open Day and join in."

Ladywell's Open Day is at the bowling green in Ladywell Fields, near the Bourneville Road entrance in Catford, from 11am - 4pm on Sunday 14th May 2022.
