Enjoyable afternoon at Ladywell's final competition of 2021

There was a good turn-out for Ladywell's annual Spoons competition at the green in Ladywell Fields on Saturday 25th September. Five triples teams competed for the Spoons trophies in a Round Robin competition that saw each team play four matches over the course of the afternoon. The winners were decided on total points difference after all matches were completed.

After five Skips were selected, club members' names were drawn out of a hat to decide who would play with who. This always leads to some friendly rivalry as partners and family members are pitted against each other - and this year was no exception.

Unfortunately, the afternoon started on a disappointing note, when we learned that one of our members, Howard Smith, wouldn't be able to take part, as he was self-isolating after his wife had been diagnosed with Covid-19. We wish them both well.

Howard's absence meant that one of the teams was a player short and had to play four woods each, with their opponents also playing eight woods.

We took our tea break after the first three rounds of matches - with everyone impressed by the excellent chocolate cake made by one of our newest members, Arron Mardel (pictured).

At this stage in the competition the team skipped by Kim Simmons had a good lead, but as every bowler knows, things can quickly change after the break.

Going into the final set of matches, Kim's team still had a narrow lead. This match saw Kim play her brother Mark, while her lead, Arron, was also playing his partner Sarah. It was a competitive four ends that was to decide the destination of the trophies, as Mark's team won 9-1, while on the other rink, the team skipped by Des Marrett won 8-1. This meant that there was a 15-point swing in the points difference of Kim's and Des's team and that Des's team were the Spoons 2021 winners.

Congratulations to all the players for an enjoyable day's bowls and particularly to the winning team, Des Marrett and Peter Ebden (pictured with their trophies).
