Ladywell edge close league match with Dulwich Park

Ladywell won a tight match with Dulwich Park in the John Colyer League on Wednesday 18th August, by just six points over three triples matches.

It was a close contest throughout the afternoon, although Ladywell made the better start on two of the three rinks. In the first match, the Ladywell triple of Richard Moorhouse, Bernie Jermin and Des Marrett fell behind early on and were trailing 8-2 after five ends. But by the halfway point after nine ends, they had pulled back to be down just one point at 8-7, despite two dead ends. After the break, Ladywell gained the upper hand, leading 11-8 and 15-11, but each time the Dulwich Park triple managed to find a way to tie the scores. With one end to play, Ladywell were ahead once again 17-16, but a single on the last end for Dulwich Park meant the match ended in a 17-all tie.

On the second rink, the Ladywell triple of Susan Levene, Marion Edwards and Phil Welch got off to a strong start, gaining points on five of the first seven ends. So, by the halfway point, they were leading 10-5. After the break, they stretched their lead to 12-5, until a gain of five for Dulwich Park on the 11th end brought them back into the match. Once again, Ladywell pulled away to lead 14-10, only for the Dulwich Park team to fight back once again. So with two ends to play, Ladywell had a narrow 14-13 lead. But on the penultimate end, fortunes swung in favour of Dulwich Park, as they gained four points to take a 17-14 lead. So, despite gaining two points on the final end, the Ladywell triple couldn't save the match, going down 17-16.

This put the pressure on the final Ladywell triple of Norman Lewis, Kim Simmons and Mark Simmons to gain the points needed to decide the outcome of the overall tie in Ladywell's favour. Again, this was a match where Ladywell started the stronger and at the halfway point after nine ends, they were leading 15-5. But as on the other two rinks, the Dulwich Park team staged a fightback after the break, pulling back to a deficit of only two points at 17-15, with two ends to play. On the penultimate end, the Ladywell team managed to gain a point which gave them the upper hand again. And with four more points on the final end, they ran out winners by 22-15. This not only gained two points for the win, but also gave Ladywell the extra four points for winning the overall match by 55-49.

The result meant that of the ten points on offer, Ladywell gained seven with Dulwich Park taking three, which raises Ladywell from third to second in the John Colyer League.
