Ladywell's match against the divisional leaders Orpington BC in the Beckenham, Bromley & District Bowling Association Triples League was a tight affair, with Ladywell gaining a valuable win on Friday 23rd July.
The match involved home and away games and Ladywell's triple of Norman Lewis, Phil Welch and Des Marrett, playing at Orpington got off to a strong start. At one stage they were leading by 9-2 and were looking to stretch their lead, but the Orpington team came back strongly, with a series of short jacks that gained them a string of points. This meant that, with one end to go, the scores were tied at 13-all and it was all on the final end. With Ladywell Skip, Des Marrett, holding the last wood, there was a measure for the shot, with one Ladywell wood and one Orpington wood each within two inches from the jack. But Des's final wood of the match came into the head and the result was two points to Ladywell and a win by 15-13.
The match at Ladywell was an equally tight affair, although again, the Ladywell triple of Richard Moorhouse, Kim Simmons and Mark Simmons got off to a strong start. In fact, with five ends to go, they were leading by 14-5. But as in the other match, the Orpington team staged a spirited fightback, with two fours and a single on the following three ends. Ladywell managed to gain a single point lead going into the final end by 15-14. Unfortunately, this time the momentum was with the Orpington team and they picked up two points on the last end to win by 16-15.
So, the final result was 30-29 to Ladywell, with Ladywell taking 4 points (2 for the away win and 2 for the overall win) and Orpington taking 2. The result leaves Orpington as one of three clubs at the top of the Division on 14 points, behind Forest Hill BC and the Met Police BC on points difference, with Ladywell in fourth on 12, so both clubs are still in the hunt for a semi-final place as one of the top two teams. So, it's all to play for in Ladywell's next match against Forest Hill on Friday July 30th.
