A friendly match at local rivals Francis Drake saw a disappointing result for the Ladywell teams, with losses on all three rinks. But the disappointment of the loss was tempered by the opportunity to give two new members their first taste of competitive bowls.
The first rink saw a close match up to the break, with the Ladywell triple of new member, Mary Ball, Ian Bradford and Skip, Richard Moorhouse holding their own against the home team. But the second half saw the Francis Drake team pull away for an 18-11 victory.
The second rink saw another Ladywell debutante, Christian Denereaz, start alongside Norman Lewis and Skip, Phil Welch. A strong home team took the early advantage and the Ladywell team had one of those days when whatever they tried didn't quite pay off. By the break, this resulted in a lead of 15-4 to the home side and although Ladywell staged a mini comeback, they eventually lost by 29-9.
The third rink saw the closest contest, with the Ladywell triple of Alvin Nelson, Howard Smith and Skip, Robert Dunn, taking a 9-6 lead into the break. They extended this to 12-6, before a score of five shots to Francis Drake on the twelfth end closed the gap to one shot, and after the 13th end, the scores were tied at 12-12. Again, Ladywell started to pull away and with three ends to go, they'd built a 15-12 lead, only for the Francis Drake team to score another five to take a two-shot lead with two ends to play. Ladywell pulled back those two shots on the penultimate end, so it was all down the last end, but a gain of two saw the home team take the victory by 17-15.
It was a disappointing end to the regular season for Ladywell. But the club can still look forward to competing in the Ron Hams Cup Final on Saturday 23rd September at Dulwich Park.
