Ladywell lose match at Southwark Park

On a day when the weather threw almost everything it could at us, Ladywell went down 56-43 in their latest league match, away to Southwark Park.

It was a mixed day in every sense for the Ladywell triples on Wednesday 25th May in the John Collyer League. The afternoon started off overcast and during the course of the match we were treated to drizzle, mizzle, heavy downpours and bright, warm sunshine. On the green, the play reflected the changeable weather, with one win for Ladywell and two for Southwark Park.

In the first match, the Ladywell trio of Susan Levene, Robert Dunn and Phil Welch started off strongly, and by the fourth end they were leading 7-1. But after this, their fortunes changed as the Southwark Park skip played a series of excellent ends. In fact, Ladywell didn't score another shot for eight ends, by which point they were 20-8 down. This turn of events continued to the end of the match, with Southwark Park eventually winning by 25-10.

It was a very similar story in the second match. Ladywell again got off to a strong start and were leading 4-2 after six ends. But once more, the Southwark Park triple found their stride and the Ladywell team of Howard Smith, Bernie Jermin and Mark Simmons found it difficult to get back into the match, not scoring again until the 15th end. And, despite gaining a creditable four shots on the 16th end, by the end of the match, Ladywell went down 22-10.

It was left to the third Ladywell trio of Terrie Sibley, Marion Edwards and Des Marrett to retrieve some points for Ladywell. After the first two ends, there was nothing between the teams at 2-2. Then Southwark Park gained a three shot lead on the third end, but the Ladywell triple pulled back to tie at 5-5 after five ends. At this point, Ladywell took control of the match, stretching their lead to 13-6 by the halfway mark. And after the break, it was a similar story, as Ladywell continued to pick up shots. So, after gaining three on the final end, they eventually won by 23-9.

This restored some pride for Ladywell, giving them a valuable two points for a match win. But the results on the other two rinks meant that Southwark Park took four points for those wins, plus another four for the overall match win, meaning the final result was Southwark Park 8, Ladywell 2.
