Ladywell Ron Hams Cup v Southwark Sports match report

Ladywell's teams had a tough match away to Southwark Sports in the Ron Hams Cup on Saturday 25th June. Here's the match report.

The Ron Hams Cup involves three matches - a singles, pairs and triples, played at the same time, with 2 points for the winner on each rink and four points for the overall winner once all the points are totalled together.

In all three matches, the Ladywell teams got off to a slow start. In the singles, Mark Simmons was 10-2 down after four ends. But he staged a mini-recovery, pulling the score back to 6-12 after nine ends. And from there, he upped his game and went on a remarkable run seven scoring ends, to take a 17-12 lead, With the winner being the first to 21, his Southwark Sports opponent came back with a single on the 17th end, but Mark retaliated with a score of three on the 18th, to go up by 20-13. And on the next end, he gained the winning shot, for a 21-13 victory.

The Ladywell pair of Slawek Rutkowski and Skip, Des Marrett got off to a similarly slow start and after seven ends, they were 12-2 down. And although they gained two shots on the next end, their Southwark Sports opponents pulled away again. With the match being played over 21 ends, there was still time for the Ladywell pair to come back. But the Southwark Sports paot proved too strong for them, eventually winning 26-10.

It was a similar story for the Ladywell triple of Alvin Nelson, Ian Bradford and Skip, Phil Welch, who gave away six shots on the first end. This put them on the back foot from the start and, after four ends, they were 10-1 down. Although they staged a small comeback to reduce the deficit to 10-7 after seven ends, the following two ends saw their opponents take another six shots to go 16-7 up. This proved too much of a challenge for the Ladywell team, so despite another fightback towards the end of the match, they eventually went down by 20-14.

This meant that the final overall score was Southwark Sports 59, Ladywell 45. So, Ladywell gained two points and Southwark Sports gained eight.
