Ladywell's Bowls Open Day a great success

Ladywell held their Bowls Open Day on Sunday 25th May, where they welcomed lots of new players onto the green to try bowls for free.

The day was part of the Big Bowls Weekend organised by Bowls England, when clubs were encouraged to throw open their doors and invite people in to have a go at bowls. Ladywell have taken part in the programme for many years, which has led to a number of players joining the club.

Despite a short shower just before opening, the weather stayed fine throughout the day, with lots of sunshine and a gentle breeze - in fact, the perfect weather for bowls. And soon a steady stream of people were making their way into the club and learning about this wonderful game.

Former Ladywell Club Secretary and the club's longest-serving player, Marion Edwards commented: "The atmosphere was great and it was so lovely to see so many people of all ages enjoying a taste of bowls."

Current Club Captain Phil Welch agreed: "Bowls really is a game for anyone, and it was great to see so many families coming to the green and introducing a younger generation to the joy of bowls. A lot of people who came through our gates had never played before - but I'm sure a few of them will be back to try it again in the near future. In fact, one visitor's already become a new Ladywell member, so we're hoping for many more!"

If you missed the Open Day, but would like to try bowls for free, you still have an opportunity. The club offers four free sessions for new players, to see if they enjoy the game. And after those four sessions, if you want to become a Ladywell member, the cost is half-price at £30 for your first year, rising to £60 for your second year.

If you're interested, you can come along to any of the club's regular roll-ups at the green near the Bournville Road entrance to Ladywell Fields in Catford from 1-4pm on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, or from 6-8pm on Wednesdays.
