On Saturday 3rd September, six teams of triples went head-to-head in Ladywell Bowling Club's annual Spoons competition. Named after the original trophies, which were engraved spoons for the winning team, this year's competition involved each triple playing matches of four ends against every other team. Overall points for and against were then calculated and the winning team was the one with the best plus points average.
The winning team (L-R): Alvin Nelson, Nova Dobbs, Des Marrett
This year's competition was played in glorious bowling weather - warm sunshine and a gentle breeze. Teams had been selected to try to ensure even matches. And the matches on the green didn't disappoint, with a number of close games, as well as some convincing wins. In particular, rink 1 was unusually difficult to play on, which posed a few challenges for a number of the teams.
After each team had played three matches, we took a break for a delicious tea. Many of the club's members had been hard at work, baking sausage rolls and a magnificent selection of fantastic cakes that wouldn't have looked out of place on Bake Off! And their efforts were much appreciated by a group of hungry players, as well as the spectators who had gathered to watch the competition.
Each triple played two more matches after the break and then gathered to hear the outcome. In the end, the clear winners, with a cumulative score of +13, were the team of Des Marrett, Alvin Nelson and Nova Dobbs.
It was a fantastic afternoon of bowls and a result that shows how the sport can be a great leveller - Alvin and Nova are two of Ladywell's newest members, both in their first full season with the club.
Many thanks to everyone who helped to organise the competition and contributed to the refreshments, as well as the players for making it such a great day.
