It was a disappointing start to the John Colyer League season on May 18th for Ladywell against Southwark Sports.
Three triples matches got off to a damp start, but the rain soon cleared and by the halfway point after nine ends, each match was closely fought, with Southwark having the edge by 1 point on two of the rinks and Ladywell leading by 2 points on the third.
But the sky was looking ominous, so the captains agreed to continue playing, rather than taking a break. This proved to be a sensible decision as heavy rain soon moved in. Southwark Sports took advantage of the heavier conditions and soon pulled away on all three rinks and as the rain got heavier, the captains agreed to abandon the match after 13 ends.
Under John Colyer League rules, the result at the time the match was abandoned stood, as more then 12 ends had been played. So, Southwark Sports won 18-11, 20-14 and 26-14 and the final score was Ladywell 39, Southwark Sports 64.
But at least it was good to be back on the green playing competitive bowls again. Hopefully we'll have better weather - and a better result in our next league match, away at Southwark Park on Wednesday May 26th, 2.30pm.
