Ladywell had a disappointing start to the season in a John Collyer League bowls match against Southwark Sports on Tuesday 14th May.
It was a tough start to the season for Ladywell, as they faced up to the reigning champions in the John Collyer League at the green in Ladywell Fields.
On the first rink, the Ladywell triple of Howard Smith, Slawek Rutkowski and Skip, Phil Welch, got off to a solid start, gaining five shots without reply on the first three ends. The visitors got on the scoreboard with two singles on the next two ends, but the home team then opened up a six point lead, to go 8-2 up after seven ends. But, by the halfway point at nine ends, their Southwark Sports opponents had once again narrowed the lead to three points, with Ladywell leading 8-5. The visitors gained another shot on the 10th end to be just two behind. But then the Ladywell team seemed to find another gear, with all three home players putting in some excellent shots. Their all-round play proved too much for the Southwark Sports triple, who only gained two shots over the final eight ends, with the home team running out comfortable winners by 20-8.
Unfortunately, it was a different story on the second rink, where, after a strong start, the home triple of Susan Levene, Alvin Nelson and Skip, Des Marrett came up against a Southwark Sports team who found their form in the second half of the match. After a very even first seven ends, when the lead changed hands a number of times, the two teams were tied at 5-5. But in the final two ends before the break, the visitors gained three shots to take a narrow 8-5 lead. After the break, however, despite Ladywell gaining a shot on the 10th end, the Southwark Sports triple pulled away, winning seven consecutive ends, including three four-shot gains, to take a comfortable 27-6 lead into the final end. And despite Ladywell picking up a shot on that end, the final score was 27-7 to the visitors.
The third rink saw a similar story, with the Southwark Sports triple only allowing Ladywell, represented by Christian Denereaz, Bernie Jermin and Skip, Richard Moorhouse, three winning ends in the entire match. In fact, the visitors dominated the first half and were leading 18-0 after eight ends, before Ladywell got on the scoreboard, gaining four shots on the last end before the break. After the break, Ladywell continued their progress, gaining two shots on the next two ends to close the gap to 18-6, before the visitors took control of the match again, eventually winning 34-6.
As far as the overall match was concerned, this meant that Southwark Sports were comfortable winners by 69-33, with Ladywell gaining two points for winning on one rink, while Southwark Sports gained four for their two wins and a further four points for the overall win.
