Ladywell win away at Temple in JCL

Ladywell's John Colyer League match at Temple BC on Saturday July 17th was a keenly fought affair, with Ladywell eventually taking eight points to Temple's two.

The first Ladywell triple to complete their match was Marion Edwards, Phil Welch and Des Marrett in a game where the Temple trio always seemed to have the upper hand until the final end. Temple got off to a strong start and were 6-0 up after four ends, but Ladywell fought back and at the halfway point had cut the lead to 11-8. Within three ends the scores were tied at 12-all, when Temple pulled ahead once again and Ladywell pegged them back again. So, with two ends to go, the scores were once again tied at 15-all. Temple gained two shots on the penultimate end and with Des's last wood to come on the final end, Ladywell were holding one shot. But Des managed to pick up the jack and take it back to give Ladywell the two points they needed for a tie at 17-all. And he was only millimetres away from picking up a third shot and the win.

On the second rink, Norman Lewis, Kim Simmons and Mark Simmons started slowly and after five ends, they were down by 8-2. But then they picked up the pace and went on a run of eight winning ends when Temple didn't pick up a single shot. So after 13 ends Ladywell were ahead 15-8. After that, they pulled away and extended their lead, eventually winning by 20-11.

This left the final triple of Susan Levene, Howard Smith and Richard Moorhouse who, after leading 6-0 early on, were 21-9 down with four ends to play. They picked up seven shots on the next three ends and were trailing 21-16 going into the final end. After a dead end when the jack was hit off the rink, which meant the end had to be restarted, all three Ladywell players sent down excellent woods, leading to a five-shot gain and a remarkable comeback to tie 21-all.

This meant Ladywell won the overall match by 58-49. With one point for each of the ties, two points for the win and an extra four points for the overall win, the outcome was that Ladywell took eight points to Temple's two. This means after four matches, Ladywell are still in third place in the John Colyer League with 20 points, with Temple in second on 22 points and Southwark Sports top on 28.
