Southwark Park v Ladywell - Ron Hams Cup bowls match report

Ladywell played their second Round Robin bowls match in the Ron Hams Cup on Saturday 8th June in an away match at Southwark Park. And after their victory at Dulwich Park the week before, Ladywell were brought back down to earth.

The Ron Hams Cup involves a singles match, a pairs match and a triple, played on the same green at the same time. Each club gets two points for a win on a rink, with an additional four points going to the overall winner based on total points scored over the three rinks.

In the singles match, with the winner being the first to 21 points, Ladywell's Club Captain, Phil Welch, got off to a strong start. After four ends, including a maximum score of four on the third end, he'd built a 7-0 lead. But his Southwark Park opponent fought back to take a narrow 10-9 lead after 10 ends. Phil pulled level on the following end, only for the Southwark Park player to take a one shot lead again on the 12th end. This was when the match swung in Phil's favour, with consecutive scores of 3, 3 and 1 on the next three ends, to take an unassailable 17-11 lead. Although his opponent fought back yet again, coming to within two points of the lead after 19 ends, Phil eventually took the points with a 21-18 victory.

Ladywell also got off to a strong start in the triples match, with the team of Alvin Nelson, Slawek Rutkowski and Skip, Robert Dunn, taking an 8-1 lead after four ends of the 18 end match. But it was a familiar story, as the Southwark Park team struck back to take a narrow 11-10 lead going into the break. It seemed that the break had done the Ladywell triple some good, as they struck back to take a 12-11 lead on the 10th end. But this turned out to be a false dawn, as the Southwark Park team won the next four ends to go 19-12 up with four ends to play. And despite Ladywell gaining two shots on the 15th end, the home team eventually won 22-14.

In the pairs match, played over 21 ends, the new Ladywell pairing of Terrie Sibley and Skip, Howard Smith faced a strong Southwark Park pair, who raced into an 8-0 lead after four ends. Ladywell got onto the scoreboard in the fifth end, gaining two shots, but the home team were really on their game and pulled away to a 15-4 lead at the halfway point after 11 ends. It was a familiar story after the break, as the Southwark Park pair continued a run of five consecutive winning ends to take a 23-4 lead. Despite Ladywell picking up a few shot towards the end of the match, the home team ran out comfortable winners by 38-8.

This meant that the overall score ended 78-43 to Southwark Park. So, Ladywell picked up two points for their win in the singles, with Southwark Park gaining eight.
