Southwark Sports v Ladywell, Ron Hams Cup bowls match report

Ladywell played their latest Round Robin bowls match in the Ron Hams Cup away at Southwark Sports Bowling Club on Saturday 27th July.

There were some doubts about the venue of the match beforehand, due to a fire at the Southwark Sports club's pavilion three days before the match. But in the end, the match went ahead at the Southwark Sports green, with a single, pairs and triples match all played simultaneously.

Ladywell Club Captain, Phil Welch was their representative in the singles match, and after a slow start, going down to two shots on the first end, he quickly got into his stride. With some excellent play and a little good fortune, he built a commanding lead over the following 12 ends. With a succession of one and two-shot gains, he didn't allow his Southwark Sports opponent a look-in, as he took an 18-2 lead. The Southwark Sports player eventually got back onto the scoreboard on the 14th end, gaining two shots, but the fifteenth end saw Phil take a 20-4 lead, needing just one more shot for the win. And despite a short-lived fightback by his opponent, he gained the point he needed on the 18th end to settle the match, 21-7.

In the pairs match, the new Ladywell pairing of Steve Marlow and Skip, Slawek Rutkowski, got off to a good start, taking a 5-0 lead after the first three ends against strong opponents. And despite their opponents raising their game, by the ninth end, Ladywell still had their noses in front, leading by 9-8. But the tenth end saw a turnaround in the match, when the home pair gained six shots, to take a 14-9 lead. There was excellent bowls being played by both pairs and the match was still a close call after 19 ends, with two ends to play and Southwark Sports leading 25-18. But the home team upped their game yet again, gaining five shots on each of the final two ends to run out comfortable winners, 35-18.

This left the match evenly poised at 42-39 in Southwark Sports' favour, with just the triples match to finish. The Ladywell team of Christian Denereaz, Merlin Ramdawar and Skip, Terrie Sibley started well and after the first five ends of the 18-end contest, were just 4-5 down. But the sixth end saw a gain of five shots for the home team, giving them a 10-4 lead. By the halfway point of the contest, this had been extended to 14-5, but the Ladywell team fought back and after 12 ends, the gap had been cut to four points, with the Southwark Sports triple leading 14-10. Unfortunately for Ladywell, over the next three ends, the home team gained nine shots, and despite Ladywell pulling five shots back over the final three ends, the final score was 23-15 to Southwark Sports.

This meant that overall, Southwark Sports won by 65-54, with Ladywell picking up two points for their solitary win in the singles and the home team gaining eight points - two each for winning the pairs and triples, and four for the overall win.
