Ladywell Bowling Club will once again be throwing open our doors and welcoming everyone in to try bowls for free at our Bowls Big Summer Open Day on Sunday 24th May between 11am and 4pm.

"Our Open Day is a great opportunity for the whole family to come down to the green in Ladywell Fields and have a go at bowls," says Phil Welch, Club Captain. "And with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow featuring lawn bowls as one of the sports later this year, you never know where learning the game might take you! In fact, a few of our current members first cam to try the game out at one of our Open Days in the past. "

The club will be opening its gates at 11am, when you can come along, borrow a set of bowls that suits you, and learn the game from some of Ladywell's experienced players.

"It's actually a very easy game to learn," says Phil. "Although, like any sport, you're always learning - and mastering it can take a lot of hard work and practice. But many of our members just come along to the club for the social aspect of the game, as much as the playing. Our regular roll-ups are a chance to get out in the fresh air - at least, when the weather behaves itself - and catch up with friends. Mind you, when we play in competitions against other clubs, we can get quite serious about it, too!"

Phil says one of the problems the club often has is the location, behind the tennis courts by the Bournville Road entrance to Ladywell Fields. So, he sees the Open Day as a chance to let people know the club exists, and that the doors are always open to everybody. "The comment we usually get from people who find us for the first time is that they didn't know we were here. And the green is a bit tucked away, which can be a disadvantage. But on the other hand, it's well protected from the wind, so when the sun's out it's a great little sun-trap. I personally think there's nothing better than having a relaxing game of bowls on a warm, sunny day down here."

He also points out that playing bowls at Ladywell needn't be expensive. "We have lots of sets of bowls for people to use, so they don't need their own. In fact, some of our members don't own a set of bowls and just use ours - even in matches. So, all you really need is a pair of flat-soled shoes or trainers - we can take care of the rest. And if you decide you'd like to become a member, we only charge £40 for the whole year, which includes a club branded shirt."

You can come along and join the Ladywell Bowling Club Open Day any time from 11am to 4pm on Sunday 24th May. See you there!
