Ladywell's men's champion, Des Marrett, won through a tough first round contest in the Bromley, Beckenham & District Bowling Association's (BBDBA) men's singles competition on Thursday 1st July.
Des won his away match at Francis Drake BC 21-18 in a contest that went to 26 ends. Having started strongly and building a 4-1 lead, he was pegged back by his opponent, Ken Shooter of Francis Drake, who then pulled ahead to lead by 11-5.
The match swung one way and then the other as Des fought back to 12-all after 17 ends and his opponent pulled ahead again to a 16-12 lead. Des came back once again and then pulled ahead to lead by 19-16. Once again the gap was closed, as Ken reduced Des's lead to 19-18, but on the 26th end Des secured the two points he needed to run out the eventual winner by 21-18.
After such a close match, Des was delighted to be through to the next round against an opponent still to be decided.
