Despite the chilly wind and occasional spots of rain, over 40 new players came to the green at Ladywell Fields in Catford to discover bowls, at our Open Day on Sunday 29th May.
Visitors were joined on the green by Ladywell Club members to introduce them to the game of bowls
Ladywell's Open Day on Sunday 29th May was a great success, attracting young and old from as far afield as Mottingham and Greenwich to discover the delights of playing bowls.
Right from the moment we opened at 11am until the green closed at 4pm, a steady stream of people came through the gates to find a warm welcome, with free tea, coffee and cold drinks, as well as free sweets, biscuits and cakes galore.
On the green, most of our visitors were having a go at bowls for the first time - although some had seen it on TV before. One visitor even admitted that she was the only person in her family who hadn't played the game - even though her sister and mother had both been national standard bowlers. But, like most of our other visitors, she picked it up remarkably quickly.
Younger visitors enjoyed the challenge of hitting the jack in our special target bowls game. And they were soon keen to try out the full-sized version, learning the secrets of the bias and finding out that, even though bowls looks like a simple sport, it can be extremely difficult!
All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day and it was wonderful to see the green decked out with balloons and full of bowlers enjoying themselves.
Getting to grips with the game...
Many visitors said they enjoyed playing the game and hoped to be back - so we look forward to welcoming them through our gates again soon!
