Saturday 4th September was Finals Day at the green in Ladywell Fields, when the 2021 winners of the Yard of the Jack competition and the overall Singles Champion were decided.
Yard of the Jack final
The Yard of the Jack final saw Bernie Jermin against Des Marrett. In this competition, each bowler has three woods and they have to get as many as they can within a yard of the jack on each of 18 ends. Both players gain a point for each of their woods that's within the yard limit.
Bernie got off to a strong start and was 10-4 up after five ends. She extended her lead over Des to 15-8 after eight ends. Des then started to stage a comeback and after 13 ends, there was only one point in it, with Bernie leading 18-17. Again, Bernie pulled away and after 15 ends, she had a four point lead that she never gave up, eventually winning 24-20 to become this year's Yard of the Jack champion.

Club Champion decided
After a short lunch break, Bernie was in action again - this time in the club's Singles Final against Kim Simmons to decide this year's overall club champion. With four woods each, the winner would be the first to 21 points - and Kim got off to a flying start, leading by 4-0 after the first three ends. But Bernie soon regained her form from the Yard of the Jack final and pulled back to take a 9-5 lead after nine ends.
Fortunes swung again in the following two ends, with Kim picking up two shots on each to make the score 9-9 after 11 ends. She then gained another seven shots over the following four ends, to take a commanding 16-9 lead. This completed a run of 11 shots in seven ends that proved to be the decisive break for Kim and although Bernie fought back valiantly, Kim eventually won on the 22nd end, with the final winning margin of 23-13.

So, Kim Simmons is our Club Champion for 2021 and Bernie Jermin is our Yard of the Jack winner. The trophies were presented to the winners by Ladywell's Club President, Joyce Duff.
