Ladywell Bowling Club are holding a free Open Day on Sunday 29th May from 11am - 4pm, as part of Bowls England's Big Bowls Weekend. It's your chance to try out a new sport for free.
The organiser of Ladywell's Open Day is Club Captain Phil Welch. He explained what you can expect: "We want it to be a day where people can come along with their family or friends and have some fun. You'll get to meet some of our club members and enjoy learning and playing our wonderful sport."
He adds that one of the main things about the Open Day is to overcome some of the preconceptions people have about the sport. "A lot of people seem to think that you have to wear the right kit and buy all the equipment to play bowls. Or they have this impression that it's a game for older people. But I'm sure if they watch it being played in the Commonwealth Games later this year, they'll see that a lot of the top players are in their 20s and 30s. And it's actually one of the most accessible sports around. We've got lots of spare sets of bowls for people to use. And you don't need any special kit - just a pair of trainers or flat-soled shoes. So I'd encourage everyone to come along and get involved!"

It promises to be a great day out for all the family. And Phil points out that bowls is a game that anyone can play, whatever your physical ability. "It's not only a great way to get a bit of exercise, but it's also a very friendly and sociable sport," he says. "So it's a wonderful way to meet new people. And most new players pick it up in no time, although becoming an expert takes a bit longer. Some of our members at Ladywell have been playing for more than 20 years - but that just goes to show how enjoyably addictive it can be!"
Ladywell's Open Day is at the bowling green in Ladywell Fields, near the Bourneville Road entrance in Catford, from 11am - 4pm on Sunday 29th May 2022.
